About Us
Creating a legacy
We are a mother and daughter duo, utilising and combining each other's individual talents and passion to create a purposeful legacy of textile and interior design, that transcends fashion and popular design ethics, into timeless and sustainable design.
About Catherine:
Catherine The beginning of her academic schooling was in Mauritius, at Loretta Convent. She then immigrated to South Africa and continued her schooling at Penzance Primary School and Berea Girls’ High School, in Durban. After obtaining a Natal Senior Certificate and special award in Art, Catherine did a three year course at Natal Technikon, where she obtained a National Diploma in Textile Design.
In 1988, Catherine obtained a position as Textile designer at Frame Textile Corporation (PTY) Ltd. Her work extended from textile designing to coordinating and designing ranges for the Fabella division of Frame Fabrics. She worked on curtaining, bedding and upholstery designs, as well as apparel designs. She also set up the showroom for clients, to display the seasonal ranges of fabrics, through hanging of fabrics and doing storyboards of the different themes.
Catherine left Frame Textiles to continue her career as a freelance textile designer. Her customer base was national and international, namely Stuart Graham, Woolworths, Frame Textiles & Frame Manchester, Eachus, Mattex, Southwoods and other design houses. Her designs also extended to apparel and wrapping paper.
Catherine then took some time to travel abroad and gained much inspiration from different cultures in Europe and Australia. She embarked on a spiritual journey which took her to do outreach programs and to deepen her faith. Her creativity expanded into writings, paintings and photography.
Catherine ran an art gallery called ‘The Living Vines’, where she found that many artists needed to have exposure for their artistic talents. She then gave art classes and workshops to adults and children, started up ministries within her church and became a motivational speaker. An exhibition of her photographs was held at Rust n Vrede Art Gallery in Durbanville.
About Christine:
Christine grew up in a very loving and creative environment, and found a passion for artistic things at a young age. After matriculating at Rhenish Girls' High School in Stellenbosch, she went on to study Photography and Graphics Design. She worked with Pam Golding Properties for 5 years and during that time, developed a love for Interior Design. After travelling to Australia for a year, she came back and decided to pursue her passion and go into a working partnership venture with her mother, Catherine.
Since she has followed in her mothers footsteps of travelling Europe and finding inspiration in the variety of cultures and natural landscapes, as well as progressing her knowledge in interior design and finding her niche in sustainable and biophilic design. Following the international LEED guidelines and education provided at international standards, Christine is ready to provide a service to create an energy and resource efficient home, while creating a beautiful and healthy space inspired by and incorporating our natural environment.
Legacy Design is built on a shared passion and love for art and design in everyday things, which will be a legacy for us to share. We believe that everyone should make their legacy apparent in the place they call home.
